Filtered showerheads have become one of the most popular hair-and-skin upgrades of the last few years. They do one job well — reducing chlorine — and get marketed for a lot more. Here is what a shower filter can and can't do, and the six worth buying in 2026, from a $37 inline filter to a $169 Jolie.

What a Shower Filter Actually Does
U.S. tap water is disinfected with chlorine or chloramine; the EPA allows up to 4 mg/L of either in drinking water (EPA National Primary Drinking Water Regulations). Shower filters use media such as KDF-55, activated carbon, calcium sulfite or vitamin C to reduce that chlorine, plus some sediment and metals. If your skin feels tight or your hair dry after showering, that is the part a filter can help with.
What a shower filter does not do is soften hard water. Hardness comes from dissolved calcium and magnesium, and removing them takes an ion-exchange water softener, not a showerhead cartridge. Some filters say they help control scale, but none of the products here claims to remove hardness minerals.
Does Hard Water Hurt Your Hair?
There is some lab evidence that it can. In a 2018 study, hair samples soaked in hard water lost more tensile strength than samples soaked in deionized water (Luqman et al., International Journal of Trichology, 2018). That is a lab test on hair strands, not a trial on people. If hard water is your main concern, a whole-house softener is the real fix; a filter mainly deals with chlorine.
How to Choose
- Replace your showerhead: Jolie, Canopy or Hello Klean.
- Keep your current showerhead: an inline filter such as Kohler Aquifer or Aquabliss, which screws in between the shower arm and the head.
- Running costs: every filter needs new cartridges, typically every three to six months — check the price before you buy.
- Fit: all of these are designed for standard U.S. shower fittings.
Best Shower Filters 2026 — The Rankings
1. Jolie Filtered Showerhead ($169) — BEST OVERALL
Jolie is the filtered showerhead that started the trend. Its filter uses KDF-55 and calcium sulfite, and Jolie says it far exceeds NSF-177 requirements. Jolie also cites its own study in which most users reported less hair shedding; that is the company's claim, not independent research. It fits standard 1/2-inch NPT shower pipes, and the cartridge swaps in about 20 seconds. About $169 in chrome (sold by Jolie Skin Company).
2. Canopy Filtered Shower Head ($150) — BEST RUNNER-UP
Canopy uses three media — activated carbon, KDF-55 and calcium sulfite — and says its filter is tested to NSF-177 standards. Installation is tool-free on standard U.S. showers, and it comes with Canopy's aroma tablets. Its listing cites a consumer perception study, so take the percentages as user impressions rather than measurements. About $150 (sold by Canopy Home Goods).
3. Hello Klean Shower Head 2.0 ($140) — BEST HANDHELD
Hello Klean's Shower Head 2.0 is a handheld head that fits any standard shower hose. Hello Klean says it cuts chlorine by 98.6% and uses 25% less water through 108 nozzles. The filter lasts three to four months (about 13,000 liters), and the product has a one-year warranty. About $140 in black (sold by Hello Klean).
4. KOHLER Aquifer Filtered Shower Head Attachment ($65) — BEST FOR YOUR EXISTING SHOWERHEAD
Kohler's Aquifer screws in between your shower arm and your current head, so you keep the shower you like. Kohler says it reduces chlorine and odor and helps control scale, and the filter lasts up to 8,000 gallons or six months. It comes in Kohler finishes to match your fixtures. About $65 in polished chrome, sold by Amazon.
5. Aquabliss SF500 Shower Filter ($46) — BEST VALUE
The Aquabliss SF500 is an inline filter with more media than standard filters (44% more, according to Aquabliss): calcium sulfite and coconut-shell activated carbon. It also has two rinseable sediment guards for gritty water. Cartridges last three to six months. About $46 (sold by Aquabliss).
6. Aquabliss SF100 Vitamin C Shower Filter ($37) — BEST BUDGET
The Aquabliss SF100 is the cheapest way to try a filter. It uses vitamin C media, which Aquabliss says reduces chlorine, sediment and some chloramine. It adds only three to four inches to your shower arm. Replace the cartridge every three to six months, or sooner if the chlorine smell comes back. About $37 (sold by Aquabliss).

A filter works best alongside a sensible routine: lukewarm rather than hot water, a gentle shampoo, and a moisturizer right after you dry off. Our best body wash and best hair loss shampoo guides cover the products.
FAQ
Do shower filters really work?
They reduce chlorine, which can leave skin and hair feeling less dry. They don't soften hard water, and claims about hair shedding come from the brands' own studies.
Does a shower filter remove hard water?
No. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, which shower filters don't remove. You need an ion-exchange water softener for that.
How often do I need to change a shower filter?
Usually every three to six months, depending on your water and the filter. Kohler rates the Aquifer for six months or 8,000 gallons; Hello Klean says three to four months.
Showerhead or inline filter?
A filtered showerhead replaces your head entirely. An inline filter like Kohler Aquifer or Aquabliss screws in between the shower arm and your existing head.
